Roatan

Roatan, Honduras

Roatán, part of Honduras, has a rich history. Initially inhabited by Paya Indians, it later became a haven for pirates. In the 18th century, the Spanish settled the island. African slaves and European settlers influenced its culture. Roatán’s strategic location led to British control until 1860. Fishing and agriculture sustained the island, and in recent decades, tourism has flourished, making it a popular Caribbean destination.

Special considerations: Roatan’s infrastructure differs from mainland Honduras, so transportation may be limited. Your travel advisor can assist with ensuring transportation is arranged prior to your arrival. Exercise general caution with regard to safety, especially in less touristy areas. Keep valuables secure and be cautious of your surroundings. Respect the island’s ecosystems and follow responsible tourism practices to preserve the island’s natural beauty. Please consult the U.S. Department of State website for travel precautions.
